The History of International Labour Day

国际劳动节的历史

The origin of Labour Day can be traced back to the United States of America in the 19th Century. In the late 19th Century, trade union and labor movements, along with countless industries, grew. This growth from cottage industry and individual laborers through the industrial revolution eventually prompted trade unionists to begin to work toward protecting the rights of the employees. Whether this was child labor laws, limited working hours, or safe working conditions, labor unions fought to take care of the workers. Sometimes these types of actions might lead to protests, work stoppages, labor strikes or even special days to celebrate the people’s labor.

May 1st, on the other hand, also known as May Day, was chosen for International Workers’ Day to commemorate the Haymarket affair of May 4th 1886. This event took place in Chicago, Illinois, in the US during a workers’ strike when an unidentified person threw a bomb at the police who had gathered for crowd control. The police then responded by opening fire on the workers, killing four of them and injuring many others.

Why Do We Celebrate International Labour Day?

People in countries all over the world celebrate International Labour Day in order to respect and highlight the contribution of workers to society. The day aims for pushing for better conditions for workers, such as an eight-hour workday.

世界各国人民庆祝国际劳动节是为了尊重和强调工人对社会的贡献。这一天的目的是为工人争取更好的工作条件，比如八小时工作制。

1 May is a statutory holiday in China. However, the actual time off is often longer than the time off in the regulations, since the extra time is not under an official holiday, the extra days must be "made up" by working on the preceding or following weekend.

5月1日是中国的法定节假日。然而，实际的休假时间往往比规定的时间长，但由于额外的时间不属于法定假日，因此额外的天数必须通过前一个或后一个周末的工作来“弥补”。

This day was always meant to celebrate the work of the everyday man, so for those who may have been feeling a bit underappreciated recently, this day might be a good day for you to do what you feel like doing and treat yourself!
